AMHERST, Mass. – Ninety-seven Amherst College student-athletes were recognized this week when the NESCAC announced its 2012 Spring All-Academic and All-Sportsmanship teams.

To earn an All-Academic selection, students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.35 and have reached at least sophomore academic standing. Of Amherst’s 94 honorees, 10 were also named to an All-Conference team in their respective sport.

Of the 925 NESCAC students who garnered All-Academic recognition, only nine were also named to the All-Sportsmanship and All-Conference teams in their respective sports. Meredith LaRose ’12 was among the elite group that earned all three conference honors, also being named to the IWLCA All-America Team as one of the best women’s lacrosse players in Division III.

Amherst’s All-Academic honorees also included a pair of national champions in Luis Rattenhuber ’13 and Keri Lambert ’13. Rattenhuber made up half of the men’s tennis doubles team that won the NCAA title last week, while Lambert capped off an impressive junior year by winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA Championship.

Helping LaRose represent Amherst on the All-Sportsmanship Team are John Wagner ’12 (baseball), Cole Cherney ’12 (men’s lacrosse), Safi Aly ’15 (women’s tennis), Chris Erickson ’12 (men’s track & field), Eliza Schalch ’12 (women’s track & field), Carly Dudzik ’12 (softball) and Wes Waterman ’12 (men’s tennis).

Members of the All-Sportsmanship Team exhibit respect for themselves, teammates, coaches, opponents and spectators. They display sportsmanship not only as a participant in their sport but also as a spectator and in their everyday lives. Through their positive actions and example, these student-athletes inspire others to adhere to the quality of sportsmanship that the NESCAC and the NCAA endorse.
