NAPERVILLE, Ill. – The women’s Distance Medley Relay squad notched an eighth-place, All-America performance on Friday night to highlight the efforts of the Amherst College track and field teams on the opening day of the 2013 NCAA Division III Championships on Friday at North Central College.

Comprised of Lauren Almeida ’13 (1200m), Naomi Bates ’14 (400m), Amy Dao ’14 (800m) and Keri Lambert ’13 (mile), the DMR unit notched the Jeffs’ lone team point with a time of 11:46.47, finishing well ahead of ninth-place Luther College (11:51.61) as they grabbed the coveted final All-America position in redemptive fashion after last year's quartet, which included Almeida, Bates and Lambert, missed the honor by one place.

UW-Oshkosh won the event with a D-III meet record time of 11:32.24, edging out Middlebury (11:34.51) and SUNY Geneseo (11:34.65) in an exciting finish. Oshkosh also ended the day leading in team competition with 26 points, followed by MIT (15).

In Amherst’s other final of the day, Bates placed 12th in the long jump with a 5.21-meter leap on her second of three attempts. The junior standout was third among NESCAC competitors behind Williams’ Tanasia Hoffler ’13, who placed third at 5.65m, and eighth-place Alexis Walker ’16 of Wesleyan (5.47m).

Meanwhile, Matt Melton ’14 highlighted the performance of the Amherst men’s team as he advanced to the eight-man final of the 800-meter run with a strong sixth-place time of 1:52.86 in the preliminary race. The finish was nearly half a second lower than his qualifying mark of 1:53.27 set at last weekend’s Tufts Last Chance Meet.

Earlier in the afternoon, Pat Grimes ’13 saw his outstanding indoor track career come to a close in the preliminaries of the mile as the senior just missed a spot in the final, placing 11th in 4:16.77. With the top 10 advancing, Grimes was edged by NESCAC rival Tully Hannan ’14 of Bates (4:16.58) for the last qualifying position.

Melton will compete in the 800m finals tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. while Lambert will wrap up Amherst’s efforts at the event in the women’s 5000-meter run at 3:40 p.m. Live video of the races is available via the NCAA Live Winter Championships page (scroll to bottom).
