Unit #4 classes will begin Monday, March 31 and end Friday, April 25, 2014.

  • Courses are for faculty, staff, and students of Amherst College.  Registration will begin on Monday, March 24 and will end on Friday, March 28, at 4:00 PM.   To sign up for courses, send an email to PEClasses listing your course selections along with your name and class year or affiliation with the College. Some classes are now being offered in O'Connor Commons. Please review class information as a class may be held in a different location for one session.

 Descriptions

Body by Boyko - One hour of fun and challenging exercise that will involve circuit training, strength training, and cardiovascular training in an upbeat atmospohere conducted by an experienced and certified instructor. Activities may be conducted indoors as well as outdoors (that means you may get a little dirty) weather permitting. Please bring a towel or yoga mat, water, and an upbeat attitutde to prepare for a challenging and rewarding workout that is aimed at all levels of fitness. Group fitness training is a great way to develop comrade and confidence while receiving a push to become more physically fit. PLEASE NOTE - Class will meet in the Conway Classroom on Thursday, April 24.

Cross-Training - Learn a combination of cross-training options including but not limited to running, biking, elliptical, pool running, and stretching.

Extreme Cardio - An intense cardio class involving shuttles, sprints, agilities, and speed work.  One hour of non-stop cardio, strength and muscle building.

Heated Vinyasa Yoga  - A steady-paced class with poses flowing from one to the next linked by breathe. Aerobic and strength-focused for the first half, a restoative quality to the second half of class.   Please bring a mat, towel and water. NEW POLICY: For hygiene reasons, we ask that all participants bring their own yoga mat. If you do not have a mat, they will be available for purchase $15/mat or students may term bill at the first class. If there are financial concerns, you may borrow a mat from the Athletic Department; please contact the instructor directly to arrange. LIMIT of 20 PEOPLE

High Intensity Training - A combination of running, plyometric, calisthenics and body weight exercises in a high tempo format.

Introduction to Machine Weights - This beginner class will introduce you to a training regimen for upper and lower body fitness.

Skipping to the Beat - Build endurance and aerobic stamina through body coordination and music. PLEASE NOTE - Class will meet in the Conway Classroom on Thursday, April 24.

Tennis Match Play - Anyone interested in playing tennis matches - this is the class for you.

Tai Chi - PLEASE NOTE - Class will meet in the Conway Classroom on Friday, April 11.

Turbo Fitness - A 30 minute class of short, high intensity cardio and strength efforts with short recovery periods. This class can adapt to any fitness level. LIMIT of 20 PEOPLE.

Zumba - As this is a popular class, you may only sign up for 1 of the 2 sessions offered. LIMIT of 20 PEOPLE

Additional Wellness Opportunities

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) - Faculty & Staff Only

This eight-week course, originally developed by Jon Kabat-Zin, Ph.D., at UMass Medical School, helps participants discover and utilize their own inner resources for cultivating health and well-being. The class will meet Tuesday evenings from March 25 to May 13, 6:00PM-8:30PM, in Conway Classroom located at Alumni Gym. Also, there is a special (and important) class on Sunday, May 4, from 9:00AM-4:30PM. All interested participants must attend an orientation on either Wednesday, March 5, or Wednesday, March 12, at 6:00PM. For more information, visit the Valley Mindfulness website at the link below.
