Jeffs Sweep Amherst Invite to Begin 2008 Season

Carlyle Eubank

Junior Carlyle Eubank led the Lord Jeff men to victory in the Amherst Invitational by placing fourth individually.

AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College men's and women's cross country teams each opened their 2008 seasons with impressive first place finishes at the Amherst Invitational. The men topped a field of four teams, and the women beat out five challengers to give both Lord Jeff squads a 1-0 start to the season.

In the men’s 5K field, Amherst saw a trio of runners from MerrimackCollege take the top three spots on the podium as Jefferson Welch, Adam Holmes and Nicholas Santoro edged the field. Just as the results appeared to tip in Merrimack’s favor, a group of nine Amherst runners took spots four through 12 on the finish sheet.

Junior Carlyle Eubank (Santa Ynez, CA) led the pack of Amherst runners with a time of 17:10.7, followed closely by classmate Jimmy Swanson (New Orleans, LA) in fifth place at 17:11.6. Sophomore Will Yochum (Goleta, CA), junior Daniel Murner (Crestwood, KY) and sophomore Ben Mears (Macedon, NY) rounded out the scoring for Amherst in the six, seven and eight spots, respectively.

Also running strong with finishes in the top-16 were Amherst’s Peter Foote (Shelburne, VT) Eric Holaday (Moorestown, NJ), Harrison Lakehomer (Eugene, OR), John McGrail (Arlington, VA), Kevin Hanley (Manhattan Beach, CA), Travis Cohoon (Rolling Hills Estates, CA) and Will Fairhurst (Tallahassee, FL).

The Amherst men finished with a team total of 30 points, in a deadlock with the Warriors of Merrimack. The Lord Jeffs won on the tiebreaker criteria of the sixth-place runner’s score.

On the women’s side, Amherst once again saw outsiders finish in the top spots, but came across the finish line as a team en route to an overall victory. After seeing SpringfieldCollege and WheatonCollege split the top four spots and a lone SmithCollege competitor place fifth, a group of Amherst runners finished alongside Springfield’s third finisher to take the six through 13 spots.

The Lord Jeff women were paced by senior quad-captain Caitlin McDermott-Murphy (Newton, MA) who placed sixth in a time of 20:49.8. She was joined by junior Sophia Galleher (Denver, CO), senior Nicole Anderson (Kailua, HI), sophomore Melissa Pritchard (Washington, DC) and senior quad-captain Elise Tropiano (Plainview, NY) to earn 43 points for Amherst, which was enough to edge Springfield, who finished with 45 points.
