Tropiano Named NESCAC Performer of the Week

AMHERST, MA – Amherst College senior Elise Tropiano (Plainview, NY) was named the NESCAC Women’s Cross Country Performer of the Week for finishing first at the NCAA New England Regional Championship this past Saturday. Tropiano’s time of 21 minutes and 49 seconds at Williams College led the Lord Jeffs to a fifth-place finish and an at-large bid into this weekend’s national championships.

Tropiano—who was recently named the 2008 NESCAC Most Outstanding Performer—has become a regular on the weekly list of conference awards, as this is her third Performer of the Week honor of 2008 and the fourth of her career.

After placing seventh at last year’s Regional, Tropiano cracked the 22-minute mark for a second consecutive season. In addition to finishing the 6,000-meter race 39 seconds ahead of the runner-up on Saturday, Tropiano bested the rest of the Amherst pack by nearly two minutes, as the next Lord Jeff to cross the line did so in 23:48.5. More than 300 runners from 49 schools competed in the Regional Championship.

The Lord Jeffs return to action Saturday, Nov. 22, when the head to Hanover, Ind., for the 2008 NCAA Championship. Last year, Tropiano placed 14th with a time of 21:54 to help lead Amherst to its first national title in program history. Saturday’s race is set to begin at 11 a.m. for the men and at 12 p.m. for the women. Both of Amherst’s teams have qualified for the national championship.
