SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - Amherst’s Greg Turissini ’15 has been named the NESCAC men’s cross country Performer of the Week after helping the Jeffs open the season with a fourth-place finish at the UMass Minuteman Invitational.

Clocking in at 24:38.09, Turissini placed seventh overall in a field of 65 and was the first Division III harrier to cross the tape at a meet that included a pair of DI programs and a DII institution. UMass’ Antony Taylor set the pace with a time of 24:20.90, followed by UConn’s McGuire Ryan (24:24.37) and Stonehill’s Ethan Penny (24:26.42).

The Minutemen’s Patrick McGowan (24:27.16) and John O’Shea (24:29.38) came in fourth and fifth, respectively, while UConn’s Jordan Magath placed sixth (24:31.59). Running an average mile of 4:55, Turissini finished nearly three seconds ahead of Keene State’s Thomas Paquette to become the first DIII athlete to cross the finish line. He is also the first Jeff to be recognized on the conference’s weekly honor roll since Will Yochum ’11 twice garnered Performer of the Week praise in the fall of 2010.

Amherst returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 22 at Wesleyan.
