Sophia Galleher Named NESCAC Performer of the Week

AMHERST, MA – Amherst College senior tri-captain Sophia Galleher (Denver, CO) has been named the NESCAC Women’s Cross Country Performer of the Week for leading the Lord Jeffs at this past Saturday’s UMass Invitational.

The 2006 NESCAC Women’s Cross Country Rookie of the Year and a two-time All-New England honoree, Galleher placed ninth in a field of 83 runners with a time of 18:03 as the only Lord Jeff to finish in the top 20 at UMass. After leading her team to victory at the Amherst Invite to open the 2009 season, Galleher raced against Division I competition this past weekend and still managed to stand out, once again leading the way for the Jeffs.

Galleher has been a consistent contributor on the women’s team, but this marks her first NESCAC Performer of the Week honor. She finished with Amherst’s second fastest time at five meets in 2008, notably the Open New England, NCAA Regional and NCAA National Championships, often placing behind reigning New England Cross Country Athlete of the Year Elise Tropiano ’09. With the team losing Tropiano to graduation, Galleher has stepped into a leading role this year and is expected to be Amherst’s top performer throughout the year.

Galleher and the Lord Jeffs return to action Saturday, Oct. 3 when they travel to Keene State College.
