Junior tri-captain Christina Wong rounded out Amherst's top five runners with a 19:50.

AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College men’s and women’s cross country teams hosted Williams College and Wesleyan University in the Little Three Championships Saturday morning, with each Lord Jeff squad placing second. Williams took home the team title in each race, with Wesleyan placing third.

The host Lord Jeffs took two of the top three spots in the men’s race, but Williams’ Edgar Kosgey edged runner-up Will Yochum (Goleta, CA) by two seconds to take home the individual title for the Ephs. Kosgey completed the five-mile race in 25 minutes and 46 seconds, with Yochum close behind at 25:48. Amherst senior tri-captain Dan Murner (Crestwood, KY) rounded out the top three with a 25:58.

Coming in next for Amherst was the junior tandem of John McGrail (Arlington, VA) and Steven Corsello (Skaneateles, NY), who placed eighth (26:23) and 10th (26:32), respectively. Also coming in under the 27-minute mark was senior tri-captain Carlyle Eubank (Santa Ynez, CA), who placed 12th with a 26:55.

Wesleyan featured two of the top three runners on the women’s side, as Ravenna Neville won the 5-kilometer race in 18:51, just barely edging Sophia Galleher (Denver, CO) of Amherst by a foot or two. Galleher led the majority of the race but would settle for second, as Neville finished strong to pass Amherst’s senior tri-captain in the final steps of the race. Rounding out the top three was Wesleyan’s Julia Mark with a solid time of 19:11.

Finishing within one second of each other and also cracking the top 10 for Amherst were sophomore Melissa Sullivan (Dallas, TX) and first-year Ali Simeone (Stoneham, MA), who placed fifth (19:16) and seventh (19:17), respectively.

Rounding out the group of Amherst women to finish under 20 minutes were juniors Hallie Schwab (Stone Ridge, NY) and Christina Wong (Honolulu, HI), who placed 12th (19:26) and 17th (19:50), respectively.

Amherst, Wesleyan and Williams will return to action Sunday, Nov. 1 when they head to Trinity College for the 2009 NESCAC Championships.
