Christina Wong '11 Named NESCAC Performer of the Week

Wong

AMHERST, MA – Amherst College senior tri-captain Christina Wong (Honolulu, HI) has been named the NESCAC Women’s Cross Country Performer of the Week, the conference announced today. Wong led the Lord Jeffs to a win at the Amherst Invitational this past Saturday by claiming the individual title.

Wong led the 5-kilometer race from start to finish, marking the first individual win of her collegiate career. Her time of 20:13.9 was 16.4 seconds ahead of the runner-up, as she stood out among the field of 52 runners. The Lord Jeffs won their home meet for the eighth consecutive year, but Wong became the first Amherst runner to claim the individual title since 2006.

Elected one of the team’s captains for a second consecutive year, Wong continues to make positive strides and is expected to play a significant role throughout 2010.  She has improved her time at the Amherst Invitational each year, placing 24th in the event as a first-year (22:17.8), 17th as a sophomore (21:08.6) and fifth as a junior (20:15.1) before coming out on top in her fourth attempt.

Wong and the Lord Jeffs will return to action Saturday, Sept. 18, when they take part in the UMass Amherst Invitational. Amherst is ranked 14th in the USTFCCCA Division III preseason poll, with the next set of rankings scheduled to be released Wednesday, Sept. 15.
