Yochum, Simeone Lead Amherst at NCAA Regionals
WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – The Amherst College men’s and women’s cross country teams each traveled to the campus of Williams College this afternoon to compete in the 2010 NCAA Division III New England Regional Championships. Ali Simeone (Stoneham, MA) and Will Yochum (Goleta, CA) each finished third individually to lead their respective teams.
The Lord Jeff women put themselves in line for an at-large bid to the NCAA National Championships with a third place finish, while the men’s team’s season comes to an end following a 10th place finish. Yochum will head to nationals via an individual automatic bid.
Simeone finished the six kilometer in a time of 22:16 to place third, while junior teammates Melissa Sullivan (Dallas, TX) placed 11th with a 22:46. Rookie Voctoria Sosnowski (Amherst, NY) placed 20th with a time of 22:59. Rounding out the scoring for the Lord Jeffs in 34th and 35th place were senior tri-captain Christina Wong (Honolulu, HI) and Angie Epifano (Green Cove Springs, FL) with times of 23:27 and 23:28. Each of Amherst’s top five finishers earned All-New England and All-Region status for finishing in the top-35 today.
On the men’s side, Yochum finished the eight kilometer track in 25:50 to place third. Fellow seniors Steven Corsello (Skaneateles, NY) and John McGrail (Arlington, VA) placed 23rd and 29th individually in times of 26:21 and 26:58, respectively. Andrew Erskine (Stamford, CT) placed 66th overall in a time of 27:13, while Dillon Buckley rounded out the scoring in 75th place (27:22). For the men's team, Yochum and Corsello each earn All-New England and All-Region plaudits.
The women’s team finished behind NESCAC rivals Middlebury (58 points) and Williams (91) WITH 103 points at the regional championship. The men’s squad racked up 216 points, while the title went to MIT (93). Williams (101) and Brandeis (139) finished on the team podium as well.
Yochum and the women’s team will travel to the campus of Wartburg College next Saturday for the 2010 NCAA National Championships.
