Sinclair, Briskin Pace Jeffs at Smith Invite
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - Placing three runners in the top-five, the Amherst women’s cross country ran away with the Smith Invitational title, finishing first out of 18 teams.
Getting her season off to a strong start, Lexi Sinclair ’16 took home the individual crown, crossing the finish line over 15 seconds ahead of her closest competitor with a time of 19:28.10. One of the Jeffs top harriers a season ago, Lizzy Briskin ’15 picked up right where she left off, placing second (19:43.53) in the field of 204.
Jessie Kaliski ’15 was the third Jeff to complete the 5K course, finishing fifth overall with a time of 20:01.74, while first-year Savanna Gornisiewicz narrowly missed out on the top-10, finishing just seconds behind WPI’s Meg Kelly ’16 with a time of 20:15.26.
Projected to be one of the team’s top runners in 2013, Betsy Black ’16 came in 17th overall (20:31.48) followed by teammates Catherine Lowdon ’17 (20:35.94), Amy Dao ’13 (20:38.75), Cara Lembo ’17 (20:42.18), Sophie Currin ’17 (20:42.43) and Lisa Walker ’14 (20:43.74) in the top-25.
Amherst took home the team championship with 36 points, followed by Wellesley (49) and the Coast Guard Academy (91) in the top-three. WPI (93) placed fourth with host Smith (144) rounding out the top-five.
Westfield State (215) and Springfield (236) came in sixth and seventh, respectively, while Colby-Sawyer (251), Southern New Hampshire (272) and Worcester State (280) came in eighth through tenth.
The Jeffs return to action on Sept. 14 at the UMass Invitational.
