LEWISTON, ME – The Amherst College field hockey team suffered its first defeat of the season this afternoon in a 5-4 loss at Bates College.

Amherst headed into the locker rooms for halftime tied at 1-1, only to see the Bobcats jump out to a 4-2 advantage in the second half, and hold on for the 5-4 win.

Amherst played exceptionally well against Bates, and was able to hang tough for a 1-1 tie heading into halftime on a first period goal from sophomore Haley Douds (South Orange, NJ). Each team had a number of first half-chances, as the two squads each took four penalty corners in the frame.

Amherst took a 2-1 lead when junior Catherine Calvert (Lawrenceville, NJ) put home a penalty stroke just four minutes into the second half.

The Jeffs saw Bates fire right back after the Calvert tally and push to a two-goal advantage at 4-2 with a trio of scores over a span of three minutes and 30 seconds. Abby Childs scored a pair of goals in the flurry, and finished the day with a hat-trick for Bates.

Amherst sophomore Molly Malloy (Stamford, CT) scored at the 19:18 mark to cut the deficit in half on an unassisted score. The Bobcats fired right back with their fifth score coming from Childs with 11 minutes left in the game. Malloy knocked home her second goal a minute later on a helper from Douds.

Amherst refused to give up and was able to bulge the back of the net again, but was left a single score from tying the game when time ran out. Amherst goalies Kathleen Boucher (Washington, DC) and Jane Mostue (Lincoln, MA) combined to make five saves for the Jeffs on the day.

Amherst returns to action Wednesday at home, when the Jeffs host Springfield College under the lights of Gooding Field for a 7 p.m. start.
