Jeffs Hold On for 2-1 Win at Tufts

Senior tri-captain Christa Porcaro had a goal and an assist aginst Tufts.

MEDFORD, MA - The Amherst College field hockey team scored twice in the first half and held on for a 2-1 victory at Tufts University in a NESCAC game on Bello Field this morning.

Tufts dominated possession, resulting in a 19-3 advantage in shots and a 22-1 final count in penalty corners. However, the Amherst duo of senior
tri-captain Christa Porcaro (Pelham, NY) and sophomore Molly Malloy
(Stamford, CT) combined for both goals and the Jumbos could not get an equalizer past Amherst keeper Kathleen Boucher (Washington, DC) despite swarming the cage in the second half.

Porcaro scored her first goal of the season, assisted by Malloy, almost
12 minutes into the game to give the Jeffs a 1-0 lead. Later in the
half, in the aftermath of their only penalty corner opportunity of the
game, Malloy scored her sixth goal of the season from Porcaro and
Amherst led 2-0. Tufts had a 9-3 margin in shots and 12-1 in corners
after the first 35 minutes.

The Jumbos seemed poised to come back when they scored just two minutes into the second half to make the score 2-1. Ileana Casellas-Katz hit in a pass from Michelle Kelly for her seventh tally of the season.

Tufts continued to threaten on offense while not allowing an Amherst
shot in the second half. Boucher was steady in the Amherst cage, helping the Jeffs hold on to the victory. She finished with seven saves. Tufts recorded 10-0 advantages in both shots and penalty corners for the second half.

The win was Amherst’s first over the Jumbos since 2004. The Jeffs (3-2/2-1 NESCAC) return to action on Wednesday evening at Mt. Holyoke for a 7 p.m. game.
