MIDDLETOWN, CT - The Amherst College field hockey team defeated NESCAC and Little Three archrival Wesleyan University 3-0 on the road this afternoon. The win is the fourth straight for the Lord Jeffs, who improve to 8-4 (4-3 NESCAC).
Amherst kept Wesleyan winless in conference play and picked up a valuable NESCAC victory as junior Haley Douds (South Orange, NJ) tipped in a feed off a corner situation in the opening minute of play to give the Lord Jeffs all they needed for victory.
Game stats were quite even in the contest, as was the general order of action, but Amherst cashed in on three of its 10 shots while Wesleyan could not get the ball by either first-year Emily Vitale (Cheshire, CT) during her 60 minutes of netminding as she had four saves, or senior Jane Mostue (Lincoln, MA), who protected the goal for the final 10 minutes and posted one stop.
First-year Chrissy Cantore (Hershey, PA) on a feed from sophomore Carly Leahy (Weston, MA) and first-year Sarah McCarrick (New Canaan, CT) on a penalty stroke, added second-half tallies for the Lord Jeffs.
Amherst narrowly out-shot Wesleyan, 10-9, while the Cardinals edged the Jeffs in penalty corners, 8-7. the Lord Jeffs return to action Saturday, Oct. 25 when they host Williams College at 11 a.m.
