Amherst Places 12 on National Academic Squad


AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College field hockey team placed 12 players on the 2010 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad, which recognizes those student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2010-11 academic year. 

Wesleyan University led the NESCAC with 14 honorees, while Amherst and Bowdoin each had 12. Middlebury and Tufts placed 11 on the National Academic Squad, followed by Connecticut College (10), Bates (9), Trinity (9) and Williams (9).

Highlighting the Amherst team are Carly Leahy ’11 and Liz Schink ’11, who are two of 10 NESCAC student-athletes to have earned the honor in each of the past four years. Also representing Amherst are Rachel Egan ’11, Chrissy Cantore ’12, Stephanie Clegg ’12, Carly Dudzik ’12, Casey Silver ’12, Nomi Conway ’13, Mary Katherine McNeill ’13, Sarah Canning ’14, Miranda Dershimer ’14, and Claudia Easton ’14.

In addition to excelling in the classroom, the 2010 Amherst field hockey team recorded one of the best seasons in program history. The Lord Jeffs finished with a 12-4 record as the 13th-ranked team in Division III, posting two winning streaks of at least five games during the season. Two of their losses came at the hands of eventual national champion Bowdoin, including a 3-2 overtime result in the NESCAC semifinals.
