Katie McMahon '13 Named NESCAC Co-Player of the Week

Katie McMahon was named the NESCAC
Field Hockey Player of the Week today.

AMHERST, MA – Amherst College sophomore forward Katie McMahon (Denville, NJ) was named the New England Small College Athletic Conference field hockey Co-Player of the Week this afternoon for her 15 points during a 2-0-0 week for the Lord Jeffs. McMahon shares this week's award with Colby's Meryl Poulin.

In a mid-week non-conference win over Smith College, McMahon tallied a career-high 11 points on four goals and three assists as Amherst won 9-0. At Wesleyan on Saturday, McMahon helped Amherst to a come-from-behind 4-3 victory with a goal and a pair of assists. The win helped the Jeffs clinch the 2010 Little Three title.

McMahon and the Lord Jeffs have been red hot as of late, having won nine of their last 10 games. After starting the season 1-2 with tough losses to Bowdoin and Tufts, no team in the NESCAC has been better than Amherst, and no player has been a more potent scoring threat than McMahon.

McMahon has failed to register a point on only three occasions this season, with the last time coming in 1 -0 win at Williams on October 2. Since then, Amherst has posted a 5-1 record in six games with McMahon pouring in an eye-popping 34 points. With 13 goals and eight assists in the last six games, McMahon now has 17 goals and 13 assists for the year.

Her 17 goals rank second in the conference, while her 13 assists and 47 points each lead the NESCAC with one game left to play in the regular season. After scoring 10 goals with five assists for 25 points as a rookie last year, McMahon has quickly become one of the conference’s best players in 2010.

Amherst (10-3 overall, 5-3 NESCAC) sits tied for fourth place in the conference with Trinity College. The two teams will play on Friday at 5 p.m. in Amherst, with the winner claiming the final home quarterfinal game for Sunday’s NESCAC Championship opening round.
