AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst College field hockey team placed 10 players on the 2013 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad. The award recognizes student-athletes who have achieved at least a 3.30 grade-point average through the first semester of the 2013-14 academic year.
Headlining the list of Amherst’s award recipients is Sarah Canning ’14, who earned a spot on the national academic squad each of her four years in Purple and White. Joining her on the prestigious list are teammates Ellie Andersen ’15, Catie Downey ’16, Emily Horwitz ’17, Annika Nygren ’16, Mary Margaret Stoll ’17, Madeline Tank ’15, Rachel Tannenbaum ’15, Anne Turnbull ’16 and Camille Youngblood ’15.
The Jeffs were also honored once again with the National Academic Team award as one of nine NESCAC schools with a team GPA of at least 3.00.
In addition to the team’s academic success, Amherst also enjoyed another impressive season on the field. The Jeffs went 13-3 overall and 9-1 in the NESCAC to finish the year ranked eighth nationally in the NFHCA Coaches Poll. Entering the conference tournament as the No. 1 seed, the Jeffs dropped a heartbreaking loss to Middlebury in the semifinals, 1-0, to narrowly miss an at-large bid to the 24-team NCAA tournament.
