WATERVILLE, Maine – Sara Culhane ’17 scored the Jeffs lone goal to lead the 10th-ranked Amherst field hockey team to a 1-0 win over Colby on Saturday at Bill Alfond Field.
The Jeffs won their sixth consecutive game against Colby and have won eight straight this season as they improve to 8-2 overall and 6-1 in the NESCAC. The Mules, who were receiving votes in the national poll, fall to 5-4 overall and 2-4 in league play.
Krista Zsitvay ’14 had the assist on the goal when her hard shot was deflected away by Colby goaltender Sarah Evans ’16. The rebound went directly to Culhane as she got off a quick shot for the goal with 4:44 left until halftime.
Jeff goaltender Emily Horwitz ’17 had four saves for the shutout.
Evans kept Colby in the game with eight of her 12 saves in the opening half. She started the week leading the NESCAC in goals against average and save percentage.
Amherst had a 19-7 shot advantage and did a good job of keeping the ball in Colby's end in the final six minutes of the contest with penalty corners and keep away play. The Jeffs also held an 11-3 edge in corners.
Amherst is back in action Saturday, Oct. 19 as they host Wesleyan at noon.
