AMHERST, Mass. – Amherst College offensive lineman John Ceccio ’13 picked up the football program’s first award of the season when he was named to the 2012 “D3 Senior Classic” Preseason All-American Team last night.
The award is presented by the Collegiate Development Football League (CDFL), a proud sponsor of the Fourth Annual “D3Senior Classic,” which will be held Dec. 7 at the site of the 2012 NCAA Division III National Championship game at the Salem Civic Center, in Salem, Va.
The Preseason All-American award is separated into north and south regions and recognizes a First and Second Team for both offense and defense. Ceccio earned a spot on the North Offense Second Team, joining Middlebury tight end Billy Chapman (North Offense Second Team) and Bates defensive back Kyle Starr (North Defense Second Team) as the NESCAC’s honorees. Amherst cornerback Landrus Lewis ’13 was the conference’s only player to receive Honorable Mention.
Ceccio is a four-year starter and two-time All-NESCAC First Team selection. Amherst led the conference in fewest sacks allowed in 2008 (5), 2009 (8), 2010 (7) and 2011 (6), and the experienced Lord Jeffs will be the favorites to earn that distinction in 2012. Last year’s offensive line paved the way for an exceptional running game, as the Jeffs averaged 189.5 yards on the ground and ran for 16 touchdowns, with both marks ranking second in the league.
After leading the Jeffs with three interceptions as a sophomore, Lewis recorded picks against Bates, Middlebury, Wesleyan and Trinity a year ago. He added 41 tackles, a sack, five pass breakups, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery, earning him All-NESCAC First Team honors as one of the best defensive backs in the conference.
The 2012 season is set to begin Saturday, Sept. 22, when the Lord Jeffs host Hamilton College at 1 p.m.
