AMHERST, MA – The New England Small College Athletic Conference named Amherst College junior kicker and punter Matt Rawson (Bethesda, MD) the Football Special Teams Player of the Week this afternoon for his play in a 44-0 season-opening win over Bates College yesterday.
Rawson had a perfect day for the Lord Jeffs, going 2-for-2 on field goal attempts and 5-for-5 on point-after-touchdown kicks. In the first quarter of Amherst’s win, Rawson hit on field goals from 25- and 33-yards, helping the Jeffs jump out to a 20-0 lead.
Also handling the punting duties for Amherst, Rawson averaged 35.2 yards per punt during the win. Of his four punts in the game, one landed inside the Bobcats’ 20-yard line.
In his second season as the Amherst place kicker, Rawson raised his career number of field goals made to 10 in just 14 tries. After converting on 66.7% of his attempts last season, Rawson has started 2010 off on a perfect pace.
Rawson and the Lord Jeffs will take to the road for the next two weeks, traveling for away games at Bowdoin and Middlebury, before returning home to face Colby on October 16. Next Saturday’s game at Bowdoin kicks off at 1 p.m.
