GRANBURY, Texas - Senior defensive lineman Matthew Sponheimer was recently selected to play in the 2012 Tazon de Estrellas (Bowl of the Stars) at La Fortaleza Azul (The Blue Fortress) in Guadalajara, Mexico on Saturday, Dec. 15.
One of 44 players from 26 Division III institutions named to the Team Stars & Stripes roster, Sponheimer follows in the footsteps of standouts Eric Bunker ’12 and Matthew Rawson ’12, who participated in last year’s game. Student-athletes were nominated by head coaches to participate in the fourth annual match-up pitting DIII players and CONADEIP All-Stars drawn from the national conference of private schools in Mexico.
Enjoying a stellar senior season, Sponheimer anchored a unit that led the conference in rush defense (110.6 ypg). Helping to lead the charge up front, Amherst held opponents to less than a 100 yards rushing on three occasions, while giving up just 63.2 yards on the ground over the season’s first four games. Surrendering just 60 yards rushing against Hamilton in the opener, the Jeffs gave up just 42 yards on the ground to league runner-up Middlebury before allowing a season-low 27 yards rushing against Colby.
Starting all eight games, Sponheimer registered 12 tackles (9 solo) on the year with 0.5 tackles for loss. For his career, the Orange, Conn. native finished with 61 tackles (30 solo), 6.5 tackles for loss and six sacks.
