Jeffs Place Ninth at UMass Dartmouth's Hampton Inn Classic
Trip Wray '11 tied for 10th to lead the Lord Jeffs at UMass Dartmouth.
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA – In its first event of the spring, the Amherst College men’s golf team placed ninth in a field of 19 teams at UMass Dartmouth’s Hampton Inn Classic. Competition began Saturday at the Allendale Country Club (6,703 yards, par 72) and concluded Sunday.
Amherst shot 12 strokes better on Sunday than it did on Saturday, finishing the tournament 102 over par at 345-333-678. Elms College cruised to the team title with a 318-308-626 (+50), which was 19 strokes ahead of runner-up Bentley. Trinity College placed third, with Husson and UMass Dartmouth rounding out the top five.
Trip Wray ’11 (Walpole, MA) led the Lord Jeffs by tying for 10th individually at 14 over par (78-80-158) in a field of 93 golfers. Pasquale Pio of Nichols College took home the individual title with an impressive 76-72-148.
Sophomore Nate Belkin (Needham, MA) placed just outside of the top 20 with an 83-80-163 (+19) for Amherst’s second lowest score. First-year Alex Butensky (Farmington, CT) saw the team’s biggest improvement from Saturday to Sunday, with his 88-81-169 leaving him in the top half of the field. Ben Johnston ’13 (New York, NY) and Matt Parsons ’12 (Wilmette, IL) rounded out the Amherst golfers with two-day totals of 188 and 195, respectively.
The Lord Jeffs will return to action Saturday, Apr. 17, when they kick off the two-day Williams College Invitational.
