Wray Leads Amherst to Fifth Place at Williams Spring NESCAC Opener

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA - The Amherst College men's golf team placed fifth within a field of six teams this weekend at the 2010 Williams Spring NESCAC Opening Tournament at the Taconic Golf Club. The Lord Jeffs were led by junior Trip Wray (Walpole, MA), who finished tied for sixth place individually.

The host Ephs shot the two lowest rounds of the weekend to win the tournament by 18 strokes over second place Trinity. The Ephs carded a 303-301-604, while Trinity (306-316-622) edged Hamilton (317-308-625) for second place. Middlebury shot a 324-320-644 to beat out the Lord Jeffs (327-322-649) by five strokes. Finishing last was Wesleyan with a 343-334-677.

Wray led Amherst with a 75 on day one at Taconic on Saturday, sitting tied for fourth place in the standings. The third year star followed up his performance under tough weather conditions at the newly opened Taconic course with an 80 to finish in a three-way tie for sixth place.

Sophomores Nate and Mike Belkin (Needham, MA) finished in 17th and 36th place, respectively, while Alex Butensky (Farmington, CT) placed 23rd individually with a 165. Nate Belkin shot one of Amherst's two rounds under 80 on Sunday, carding a team-low 78. Rookie Ben Johnston (New York, NY) finished tied for 29th with an 88-81-169, while newcomer Mark Colp (Wareham, MA) shot a 91-83-174.

Amherst will next compete in 48 hours at a mid-week tournament hosted by Worcester State College.
