Amherst Finishes in 11th Place at Mid-Week Worcester State Event
WORCESTER, MA – The Amherst College men’s golf team placed 11th in a field of 16 teams this afternoon at the 2010 Worcester State Invitational Tournament. Amherst carded a 345 in the one-day event, finishing 47 strokes off the blazing pace set by eventual champion Trinity College (298).
For the third straight event, Amherst junior Trip Wray (Walpole, MA) led the team in scoring, finishing with in a four-way tie for seventh place individually. Wray shot a four-over par 76, carding identical 38s on both the front and back nine. Wray was consistently good all day on the par-72, 6,655 yard course at Blackstone National.
Wray was the only Lord Jeff to break 80, with Ben Johnston (New York, NY) and Nate Belkin (Needham, MA) scoring in the mid-80s. Johnston finished the day with an 85, shooting just one stroke worse on the back (43), than the front (42). Belkin finished tied for 43rd individually with an 87 after cutting a stroke off his front nine (44) after the turn (43).
Matt Parsons (Wilmette, IL) and Mike Belkin (Needham, MA) rounded out Amherst’s entrants with scores of 97 and 98, respectively. The Lord Jeffs have just one event remaining this spring, with the 2010 Little Three Championships looming in the distance.
