Amherst Closes Season With 2nd at Little Threes
Senior tri-captain Will Collins earned three of
a possible four points in his final match for
the Amherst men's golf team.
In the morning, each team put forth four two-man teams to compete against each other in 18 holes of best-ball play. The two-man scramble is followed by the traditional eight-man individual competition in the afternoon. On the day, Williams beat Wesleyan 12-0 and Amherst 8-4, and Amherst beat Wesleyan 8-4.
Amherst played well in the morning, and emerged in a 2-2 deadlock with the Ephs, while taking a 3-1 lead over the Cardinals. Amherst grabbed strong performances from the pairings of Trip Wray (Walpole, MA) with Will Collins (Edina, MN) and Nate Belkin (Needham, MA) with Chris Valentine (Topsfield, MA). Wray and Collins beat out the number three Eph team 1-up, while topping Wesleyan 6-and-4. Belkin and Valentine were equally as impressive at number four, topping Williams 1-up and Wesleyan 9-and-8.
In individual play, the Lord Jeffs did not fair as well as in the morning, as both the Ephs and Cardinals took two points in each of the top three matches. Senior tri-captain Glenn Wong (Leverett, MA) reversed that trend at number four, halving his match against William’s Jacob Wagner, before topping Wesleyan’s John Torrenti 3-and-2.
Collins and junior Adam Shniderman (Fort Lauderdale, FL) each dropped their individual match against Williams, while beating their Wesleyan opposition. Rookie Peter Theiss (Wilmette, IL) was particularly impressive in individual play, winning his match against Williams 2-and-1, while topping Wesleyan 5-and-4.
With today’s results comes the end of the 2008-09 season for Amherst, and the careers of four seniors. Tri-captains Wong, Valentine and Collins each played four years for Amherst, while classmate Marcus Bradley (Latham, NY) joined the Amherst ranks just last season. The four senior leaders will be missed for their contributions to the team both on the course and off.
