Amherst Places 13th at Williams Invitational

Sophomore Trip Wray led Amherst by finishing in a tie for fourth place.

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – The Amherst College men's golf team placed 13th in a field of 20 teams at the Williams College Invitational, with sophomore Trip Wray (Walpole, MA) leading the way by finishing in a tie for fourth place individually. The Lord Jeffs return to action next weekend for the NESCAC Championship Qualifier at Middlebury College.

After finishing in a tie for eighth place with a 149 at last weekend’s Duke Nelson Invitational held at Middlebury, Wray led the Lord Jeffs this weekend with a 147 to once again place in the top 10. Senior tri-captain Glenn Wong (Leverett, MA) competed in his second tournament of the year and once again finished with Amherst’s second lowest score. Wong shot an impressive 74 on Saturday before slipping slightly on Sunday with a 79 to finish in a tie for 31st place in the field of 108 golfers.

Senior tri-captain Chris Valentine (Topsfield, MA) and first-year Mike Belkin (Needham, MA) each shot a 163 at the two-day event to tie for 74th place, with fellow senior tri-captain Will Collins (Edina, MN) rounding out the Amherst squad with a 166.

Skidmore and Middlebury each finished with a 596 and were forced into a playoff, with Skidmore hanging on for the team title. The Thoroughbreds held a comfortable nine-stroke advantage over Middlebury after day one, but the Panthers stormed back to shoot an impressive 290 on Sunday to force the tie-breaker. Middlebury’s Harrison Bane shot a one-under par on Sunday to come from behind to capture the individual title.
