Trip Wray '11 Leads Amherst to Third Place at Trinity

Trip Wray '11 tied for 2nd place individually.

HARTFORD, CT – Riding an outstanding performance from senior co-captain Trip Wray (Walpole, MA), the Amherst College men’s golf team placed third in a field of eight teams at the Trinity College Fall Invitational. The Lord Jeffs’ two-day total of 611 marked one of the team’s best showings in recent history.

Saturday's round was played at the Pine Valley Country Club, a par-71 course in Southington, Conn. The final round was played at the Shuttle Meadow Country Club, a par-71 course in Berlin, Conn.

Kicking off the fall slate at Trinity for the third consecutive year, Amherst put in its best season-opening performance in at least 10 years. The Jeffs shattered the scores they posted at Trinity the previous two years, as they placed sixth in the event in both 2008 (633) and 2009 (637).

Notably, Amherst finished just ahead of the host Bantams, who won last year's NESCAC Championship. Babson College took home the team title with a 599, with Manhattanville placing second at 608.

Wray led Amherst on Saturday with a 75, but his score of 69 on Sunday stood out and catapulted him into a tie for second place in the final individual standings. In a field of 40 golfers, Wray was the only competitor to break 70 in either round of the par-71 courses. His improvements at the Trinity Fall Invitational have been drastic, as he shot a 163 as a sophomore and 153 a year ago before finishing with an impressive 144 this weekend.

Peter Taylor of Wesleyan University won the individual crown by shooting par on each day, followed closely by Wray and Babson's Bryan Eger, who each finished at two over.

Amherst's Nate Belkin '12 (Needham, MA) finished third among NESCAC golfers and tied for ninth overall, shooting a 77 on Saturday and 76 today. Alex Butensky '13 (Farmington, CT) and Erik Hansen '14 (Deephaven, NH) each tied for 16th with two-day totals of 157, while co-captain Mike Belkin '11 (Needham, MA) rounded out the Lord Jeffs at 171.

The Jeffs will return to action Saturday, Sept. 18, when they kick off the two-day Duke Nelson Invitational at Middlebury College.
