NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. - With a pair of top-15 individual finishes, the Amherst men’s golf team opened its spring season by tying for third at the Hampton Inn Invitational hosted by UMass-Dartmouth.
With Friday’s opening round rained out, the tournament was shortened to an 18-hole event on the Allendale Country Club’s par 72, 6,703-yard course on Saturday.
Just three strokes off the pace set by Nichols’ Colin Whitney, Jarvis Sill ’15 led all Amherst golfers, wrapping up the day in a six-way tie for fifth with a three over par 75. Recording his best round of the 2012-13 season, Sill notched his first top-10 finish of the year.
Josh Moser ’15 tied for 11th in the field of 95, carding a 76, while Alex Butensky ’13 and Erik Hansen ’14 each turned in an 82. Ben Johnston ’13 rounded out the list of Jeff competitors with an 83.
Host UMass-Dartmouth took the team title with a 305 after four golfers placed in the top-15. Nichols took second (312), followed closely by Amherst and Tufts in third (315). Husson (316) rounded out the top five, with Springfield (317), Rhode Island College (318) and Babson (320) finishing sixth through eighth.
Amherst returns to action on Apr. 20-21 at the Williams Spring Opener.
