Trinity Leads After First Day of NESCAC Qualifier

AMHERST, Mass. - Hamilton’s Matt Yung carded a one over par 73 to lead all golfers at the 2012 NESCAC Qualifier hosted by Amherst College at the Hickory Ridge Golf Club.

Williams’ Ross Bowen carded a two over par 74 on the 6,704-yard course to place second after day one, while the Continentals’ Mac Pivirotto (75) and Middlebury’s William Prince (75) tied for third.

The Jeffs’ Nicholas Koh ’14 shot a 76, along with Trinity’s William Burchill, Greg Palmer, Don Hunt and Nick Buenaventura.

With four golfers in the top-10, the Bantams closed out the day in the lead with a team total of 304. Behind Yung, Pivirotto and Greg Scott, who tied for 10th with a 77, Hamilton finished two shots back (306), while last year’s qualifier winner, Williams sits in third (307) with three of its players ranking in the top-10.

Defending champion Middlebury, which captured the 2008 and 2010 fall qualifiers, currently ranks fourth with a team total of 314, while host Amherst and Colby each finished the first round of play with a team score of 321. Bowdoin (324) and Bates (328) sit seventh and eighth, respectively, while Tufts (331) and Wesleyan (349) rounded out the field of 10.

Amherst’s Alex Butensky ’13 and Jarvis Sill ’15 tied for 24th after the first 18 holes with an 81, while James Line ’16 (83) and Ben Johnston ’13 (85) wrapped up the list of Jeff competitors.

Play resumes tomorrow at 10:15 a.m. The highest finisher at the two-day, 36-hole event earns the right to host the spring championship round at its home course along with the remaining top three teams from the qualifier.
