Amherst Places Fifth at NESCAC Qualifier

AMHERST, Mass. - Led by individual champion Greg Palmer, Trinity College carded a two-round 592 (304-288) to capture the 2012 NESCAC Fall Qualifier and the right to host the spring championship on Apr. 27-28.

Leading from start to finish, the Bantams saw all five of their participants place in the top-10. One of four Trinity players who carded a 76 during the first round, Palmer finished with a tournament-best one under par 71 on Sunday to finish with a two-day 147. Teammates William Burchill (148-76-72) and Nick Buenaventura (148-76-72) tied for second, while Jack Palley (152-79-73) and Don Hunt (152-76-76) tied for seventh.

Williams, led by Ross Bowen (152-74-78) and Matt McCarron (152-77-75), placed second with a two-round total of 607 (307-300), while Hamilton (611-306-305) and Middlebury (613-314-299) came in third and fourth, respectively. The top four teams at this weekend’s qualifier earned a berth into the spring championship.

Amherst placed fifth with a 628 (321-307), followed by Bowdoin (640-324-316), Colby (645-321-324) and Tufts (650-331-319) in sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively. Bates (660-328-332) and Wesleyan (690-349-341) rounded out the field of 10.

Finishing just outside the top four for the second-consecutive season, Amherst (628) fared better Sunday, shaving 14 strokes off its first round tally of 321. Nicholas Koh '14 led all Jeff golfers, placing fifth with a two-day 149. Shooting a 76 through the first 18, Koh carded a one over par 73 in round two.

Taking 10 strokes off his first day score, Ben Johnston '13 handed in a 160 (85-75), while Jarvis Sill '15 followed with a 161 (81-80). Alex Butensky '13 (81-81) and James Line '16 (83-79) tied for 30th with a 162.
