Jeffs Win Westport Hampton Inn Invitational Title

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Led by Josh Moser ’15, the Amherst men’s golf team opened its spring season by winning the 2014 Westport Hampton Inn Invitational hosted by the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth.

Just three shots behind Endicott (320), Amherst ranked fourth after round one on the Allendale Country Club’s par-72, 6,764-yard course. Shaving six strokes off their team total on Saturday (314), the Jeffs made up ground and finished with an Invitational-best two-day score of 634.

Turning in the lowest round of the tournament, Moser shot a one over par-73 in round two to lay claim to the individual crown. Finishing just one stroke ahead of Elms’ Henry Fall, Moser carded a total of 152 thanks to a 79 during the opening round.

RIC’s Tim Leigh and Endicott’s Austin Teal tied for third overall (155), while Johnson & Wales’ Sam Parella and Suffolk’s Joe Surace finished fifth (156) and sixth (158), respectively. Posting a two-day total of 159 (80-79), Amherst’s James Line ’16 tied for seventh with Husson’s Greg Martin and UMass-Dartmouth’s Mike Byron.

Recording a 79 in round one, Liam Fine ’17 shot an 81 on Saturday to finish tied for 10th (160) in the field of 84, while teammate Brandon Brown ’15 turned in a two-day total of 163 (82-81). Nicholas Koh ’14 rounded out the list of Amherst competitors, tying for 38th with a 169 (82-87).

RIC finished as the tournament’s runner-up (639-318-321), followed by UMass-Dartmouth (641-326-315), Endicott (645-315-330) and Salem State (649-315-334) in the top-five. Nichols and Husson tied for sixth (660) among the tournament’s 17 participating programs, while Johnson & Wales (662), Elms (664) and Suffolk (671) came in eighth through 10th, respectively.
