Amherst Storms from Behind to Defend Vassar Invitational Title
Amherst successfully defended its title at the Vassar Invitational.
POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The Amherst College women’s golf team successfully defended its Vassar Invitational title by storming from behind on the second day of competition at the Dutchess Golf and Country Club. The Lord Jeffs finished day one in fourth place but shot an impressive 325 on Sunday to win the event by six strokes.
Williams College placed second with a 676, while the host Brewers—who held the lead heading into Sunday—finished third with a 681. Wellesley College was just outside the top three with a 683, while St. Lawrence University finished in fifth (701). This was the first year the event was held at the Dutchess Golf and Country Club, which has a yardage of 5,805 and a par of 72.
Senior captain Kinne Schwartz (Allen, TX) played a big part in Amherst’s strong performance, with the day’s low score on Sunday and the overall low score of the weekend (76). Each of Amherst’s five players shot better on Sunday than on Saturday, but Schwartz stood out by shaving 13 strokes off her day-one score (89-76-165). Schwartz tied for third in the individual standings, finishing five strokes behind individual champion Celynne Balatbat of Vassar.
First-year Liz Monty (North Granby, CT) and junior Hayley Milbourn (Baltimore, MD) finished right behind Schwartz at 166 (6th) and 167 (T-7th), respectively. Sophomore Laura Monty (North Granby, CT) tied for 15th with an 87-85-172, while sophomore Elaine Lin (Clarksville, MD) shot a 100 on Saturday and a 90 on Sunday. First-year Irene Hickey (Glencoe, IL) competed as an individual, shooting a 182 on the weekend.
Sunday marked Amherst’s third tournament title of the year and first of the spring season, as the Jeffs claimed the Middlebury and Williams Invitationals back in October. When Amherst won the Vassar Invitational last year, it began a dominant stretch that saw the Jeffs win four out of five events heading into the NCAA Championships.
The Lord Jeffs will return to action Friday, Apr. 16, when they attempt to defend their title at the Massachusetts State Tournament at The Orchards in South Hadley, Mass.
