Amherst first-year Liz Monty led the Lord Jeffs to the
2010 Mass State Championship title.
S. HADLEY, MA - Led by a standout performance by first-year Liz Monty (N. Granby, CT), the 2nd-ranked Amherst College women's golf team won the Massachusetts State Championship team title at The Orchards Golf Club in South Hadley this afternoon for the second straight season. The Lord Jeffs pulled out the win over teams from Wellesley, Westfield State and host Mount Holyoke College.
In the single round event, played at the par-72 Donald Ross designed Orchards, Monty finished the first 18 holes in a deadlock for first place with Wellesley's Kim Eaton at an 8-over, 80. While Amherst had locked up the team title after the round, Monty needed four more holes to take the individual medalist honors from Eaton.
Amherst junior Hayley Milbourn (Baltimore, MD) placed third individually with a score of 82, while senior captain Kinne Schwartz (Allen, TX) was close behind with an 84 in fourth place.
Laura Monty (N. Granby, CT) and Elaine Lin (Clarksville, MD), Amherst's final two players entered in the team scoring, tied for sixth place individually with identical scores of 87. Using just one of those 87s, the Lord Jeffs finished with a team score of 333, edging the nearest competitors by 13 strokes.
Wellesley placed second with a 346, while Mount Holyoke finished with a 376 and Westfield State punched in a 441. Irene Hickey (Glencoe, IL) played as an individual, but shot an 88 to finish tied for 8th place.
The Lord Jeffs will open play at their own two-day tournament tomorrow, kicking off the 2010 Jack Leaman Invitational with round one action at Hickory Ridge Golf Club. Amherst and the rest of the field will return to The Orchards for the final round of the tournament on Sunday.
