Amherst junior Hayley Milbourn won the 2010 Jack
Leaman individual title for the third straight year.

AMHERST, MA – Amherst College junior Hayley Milbourn (Baltimore, MD) shot the low score of the tournament this afternoon with a two-over par 72 to earn medalist honors, and lift the 2nd-ranked Lord Jeffs to the team title at the 2010 Jack Leaman Women’s Championship. Amherst finished with a two-day score of 659 to pull away from Wellesley (669) and Williams (673).

Amherst and Wellesley sat tied atop the team standings after day one of the tournament at Hickory Ridge Country Club yesterday, but Milbourn carded the lowest score of the weekend on Sunday to help separate the two schools at The Orchards Golf Club. Milbourn (84-74-158) pulled out the win over Becky Miller (80-81-161) of Williams, and a quartet of players at 162.

Helping Amherst win the title was rookie Liz Monty (N. Granby, CT), who had a share of the lead after Saturday’s opening round. Monty sat in a three-way tie for first place heading into today with a score of 80 in the first round, before shooting 84 on Sunday to slide into a tie for eighth place individually.

Amherst sophomore Elaine Lin (Clarksville, MD) finished in a tie for 14th place with an 85-82-83, while senior captain Kinne Schwartz (Allen, TX) placed in the top-20 with an 87-83-170. Sophomore Laura Monty finished in 28th place individually with an 87-88-175 as well.

The Lord Jeffs entered a trio of individuals into the field this weekend, with junior Jordan Chafetz (Palos Verdes, CA) and sophomore Nina Yoo (Duluth, GA) finishing tied for 24th with identical 174s. First-year Irene Hickey (Glencoe, IL) placed 46th overall with a 94-88-182 as well.

While Williams’ Miller was unable to break 80 on the weekend, her consistent play (80-81) was good enough to edge a handful of players breathing down her neck. Finishing tied for third place in the individual standingss with scores of 162 were Wellesley’s Cassandra Tavolarell (81-81), Cortland’s Ashley Meng (81-81), Holy Cross’s Megan Doherty and Middlebury’s Flora Weeks (84-78).

Today’s team victory is Amherst’s fifth team title of the academic year, while Milbourn picked up her third medalist title of the year. Milbourn has also won the Jack Leaman title in each of her three years at Amherst.
