Amherst's Milbourn and Morgan Honored by NGCA

Hayley Milbourn was named an NGCA All-American
for the third straight year.

AMHERST, MA – The National Golf Coaches Association announced its 2009-10 Division III Award Winners this afternoon, tabbing Amherst College women’s golf coach Michelle Morgan and standout player Hayley Milbourn (Baltimore, MD) for prestigious honors.

Morgan, now in her 32nd year at Amherst and 20th season as the head coach of the women’s golf team, was named the 2010 Division III SkyCaddie Regional Coach of the Year for the East Region.  The award is just the latest in a long line of career accolades for the storied head of the Lord Jeff program. During her tenure at Amherst, Morgan has coached the women’s squash, basketball, lacrosse, soccer and now golf teams. She has earned national and regional recognition for her work with both soccer and golf, and was at the forefront each time Amherst added a new women’s varsity sport over the last three decades.

Amherst Athletic Director Suzanne Coffey describes Morgan as “an outstanding coach, mentor and leader.” Coffey adds that she is “so pleased to see her honored in this fashion. Her years of dedicated service as a faculty member at Amherst have been highlighted by her extraordinary devotion to the students whom she has coached.”

For the third consecutive year, Milbourn was named an All-American by the NGCA.  While grabbing her third straight First Team All-Region honors, Milbourn was selected as a Second Team All-American this season. As a first-year in 2007-08, Milbourn was named the NGCA Division III National Freshman of the Year, while earning First Team All-American status. With this afternoon’s recognition and a repeat appearance on the First Team last year, Milbourn will have the rare opportunity to become a four-time All-American with another great season next year.

This year, Milbourn won four individual titles, while helping lead Amherst to six team victories. Amherst took home first place finishes at the Middlebury and Williams Invitationals in the fall, before winning the Vassar Invitational, the Massachusetts State Championship, the Jack Leaman Championship and the Spring Williams Invitational in a three-week window this spring. With her four titles this year, Milbourn has earned medalist honors 12 times during her three-year Amherst career.
