Lord Jeffs Start Spring Swing with 11th Place Finish at Jekyll Island Collegiate
JEKYLL ISLAND, GA - The Amherst College women's golf team started their spring season this weekend at the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational in Georgia. The Jeffs showed some early signs of the winter break, but played their way to an 11th place finish among the talented 26 team field.
Amherst traveled to the golf-focused island off the coast of Georgia early during the week with classes halted for Spring Break, and put in a number of hours each day on the course and range. With courses in New England still not open for the season, Amherst was hitting outside for the first time since the fall.
The Lord Jeffs opened up play shooting a day one total of 348, but rebounded to shoot a team tournament-low of 337 on day two. Leading scorer Hayley Milbourn (Baltimore, MD) struggled to hit greens in regulation on the first and third day but put it all together on the middle day to score an impressive 77. Milbourn placed 14th individually for the three-day tournament.
After the first day of action, sophomore Kinne Schwartz (Allen, TX) led all 142 players in the tournament in par-three scoring. Schwartz and first-year Alissa Korpi (Chaska, MN) each shot 84 on the first day to pace the Jeffs, and finish 57th and 73rd, respectively.
Senior captain Ali Berman (Boca Raton, FL) played consistently over the week, and looked strong in the middle of Amherst's line-up. Her three-round total of 265 was good enough to place the senior-leader in 65th place individually.
Perhaps one of the brightest performances for Amherst, and the entire tournament, was the play of junior Amanda Otieno (Gloucester, MA). Otieno was a walk-on to the Amherst team last season, and as a two-sport student-athlete, missed the entire winter workout schedule while on duty with the women's basketball team. Otieno must have carried some momentum off the best season in women's basketball history at Amherst, because on day two, she broke the 100 mark for the first time in her collegiate career with a 95.
Amherst will continue to hit inside, and wait for the local courses to open for the spring. The next tournament appearance for the Lord Jeffs will come on April 12-13, when they travel west to play in the 2008 Vassar Invitational.
