Amherst Takes Fourth at Massachusetts State Championships

Kinne Schwartz played well, and made
a tough but honest call.

SOUTH HADLEY, MA – The Amherst College women’s golf team competed in the 2008 Massachusetts State Championships this afternoon at The Orchards in South Hadley, MA. The Lord Jeffs placed fourth overall as a team, while first-year Hayley Milbourn (Baltimore, MD) placed second individually.

On a beautiful day, Amherst traveled down the road to the home course of tournament host Mt. Holyoke College. Amherst started the day slowly, but came on down the back nine to take fourth place overall. All five of the Lord Jeff competitors improved in scoring from the front nine, to the back nine, to rally into contention.

Amherst’s top finisher was once again Milbourn, who double-bogied the ninth hole to finish the front nine at 42. Milbourn gathered herself at the turn to shoot a blazing 37 on the back, and slide into second place overall.

The trend of improved scoring followed all the way down the ladder for Amherst, as first-year Alissa Korpi (Chaska, MN), sophomore Kinne Schwartz (Allen, TX), junior Amanda Otieno (Gloucester, MA), and senior captain Ali Berman (Boca Raton, FL) each took strokes off after the turn.

A highlight for the day was provided by Schwartz on the par four 11th and 12th holes. After hitting a routine tee shot on the 11th, Schwartz hit her second shot into a water hazard. As she was heading for the drop zone, the second-year player realized she had hit the wrong ball. She made the announcement to her opponents, and was penalized two strokes.

Schwartz went on to hit from the fairway for what scored as her fourth stroke, and stuck a long iron shot to within a foot of the hole. Schwartz ended the 11th hole with a double-bogie, but took some gained momentum from the great recovery. On the very next hole, Schwartz stuck another fairway iron shot to within a few feet of the pin en route to a par.  Despite the self-imposed penalty, Schwartz took five strokes off her score from the front nine to finish with a 93 overall.

Amherst will host the 2008 Jack Leaman Invitational this weekend, with play at Hickory Ridge Golf Club on Saturday, and The Orchards on Sunday.
