Amherst Takes 2009 Jack Leaman Invitational; Milbourn Wins Individual Crown

AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College women’s golf team closed out the 2009 Jack Leaman Invitational tournament this afternoon with a team total of 330 at the par-72 The Orchards in South Hadley, MA to take the title. The Lord Jeffs shot 327-330-657 to lead the 11-team field from start to finish for their fourth team title of the year. Middlebury placed second with a 677, while Saint Lawrence University finished in third with a 683.

Amherst sophomore Hayley Milbourn (Baltimore, MD) took home the individual title this afternoon, edging Middlebury’s Julie Ellenberger by four strokes. Milbourn shot 79 on Saturday at Hickory Ridge, before posting a tournament-best 75 on Sunday for a 154. Ellenberger finished with an impressive 82-77-159 for second, while Amherst’s Elaine Lin (Clarksville, MD) and Vassar’s Alex Bello tied for third with a two-day 161.

Lin was the leader after the opening round of the tournament, shooting a 77 to put Amherst in first place, before posting an 84 on Sunday. Bello posted an 82 on Saturday, before turning up the pressure at The Orchards with a 79 to close the weekend.

Amherst took home the team championship riding the strong performances from Milbourn and Lin, while getting solid depth from Nina Yoo (Duluth, GA), Laura Monty (N. Granby, CT) and Amanda Otieno (Gloucester, MA). Yoo finished in a three-way tie for 11th place with an 82-86-168, while Monty finished tied for 20th individually with an 89-85-174. Otieno shot a season-best 89 on Saturday, before posting a 106 on Sunday to place 41st individually.

Middlebury’s Flora Weeks and Vassar’s Kaleigh Hon tied for fifth place individually, as each scored a 162 at the two-day event. Many of these teams will meet once again next weekend at a tournament hosted by Williams at the Taconic Golf Club.
