Amherst Places Third at Williams Spring Invitational

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – The Amherst College women’s golf team placed third at the Williams College Spring Invitational Tournament with a two-day score of 667. The Lord Jeffs trailed Middlebury by only one stroke after the first day of competition but finished the weekend 23 strokes behind the Panthers, who took home the team title with a 644.

Amherst snapped its streak of three consecutive team titles, as the Lord Jeffs had won the Vassar Invitational, Massachusetts State Championships and Jack Leaman Championship in a span of two weeks. Amherst will next compete at the Wellesley Invite on May 2 and 3 to wrap up the regular season before hoping to take part in the 2009 national championships in Port Saint Lucie, Florida.

Middlebury’s Julie Ellenberger (154) and Flora Weeks (155) placed first and second, respectively, to lead the Panthers to the team title. Zahra Aliza Hanif was close behind in third place with a 157 to lead Mount Holyoke, which finished second as a team.

Leading Amherst were sophomore Hayley Milbourn (Baltimore, MD) and first-year Laura Monty (North Granby, CT), who each shot a 161 to tie for sixth place. Milbourn shaved three strokes off her day-one total, while Monty saw a one-stroke improvement on Sunday.

Amherst first-years Nina Yoo (Duluth, GA) and Elaine Lin (Clarksville, MD) tied for 18th (170) and 25th (175), respectively, with Amanda Otieno (Gloucester, MA) rounding out the Lord Jeffs in 36th place.
