Amherst Places Fifth at Dartmouth in 2008 Opener

Sophomore Hayley Milbourn led Amherst with a 78-78-156.
HANOVER, NH – The Amherst College women’s golf team kicked off its 2008 fall season with a fifth-place finish at the Dartmouth College Invitational. The two-day event featured more than 90 golfers from 17 schools, with Harvard University taking home the team title and Katelynn Mannix of Siena grabbing the individual crown after a playoff with Harvard’s Christine Cho.

After winning the individual title at the 2007 Dartmouth Invitational with an impressive 71-75-146, Amherst sophomore Hayley Milbourn (Baltimore, MD) shot a 78-78-156 to lead the Lord Jeffs and land in a tie for 11th place to open her 2008 campaign.

Although the Jeffs couldn’t claim back-to-back individual titles at Dartmouth, they were able to shave 43 strokes off last year’s total of 684 that left them in a tie for 10th place. Amherst shot a 322-319-641 this time around to finish ahead of fellow NESCAC schools Williams (ninth, 662) and Middlebury (10th, 668).

Junior captain Kinne Schwartz (Allen, TX) helped Milbourn land Amherst in the top five, as her two-day total of 159 left her in a two-way tie for 18th place. Schwartz saw a 12-stroke improvement from just a year ago, when she placed 39th at Dartmouth with an 87-84-171.

Making their collegiate debuts and finishing 3-4-5 for the Lord Jeffs were first-years Nina Yoo (Duluth, GA), Elaine Lin (Clarksville, MD) and Laura Monty (North Granby, CT). After shooting an 85 on Saturday, Yoo matched Milbourn’s 78 on Sunday to tie for 32nd place, while Lin got off to a strong start with a 79 on Saturday before her 88 on day two left her in a tie for 49th.

Rounding out the Amherst golfers and finishing within two strokes of each other were sophomore Alissa Korpi (Chaska, MN) and junior Alex Chang-Graham (San Carlos, CA). Chang-Graham’s 188 marked a nine-stroke improvement from last year’s performance at Dartmouth.

The Lord Jeffs return to action Saturday, Sept. 20 when they kick off the Mount Holyoke Invitational.
