Amherst Comes Out on Top at Mount Holyoke Invitational

SOUTH HADLEY, MA – The Amherst College women's golf team shot a 657 at the 33rd annual Mount Holyoke Invitational to finish six strokes ahead of the host Lyons, marking the first team victory for the Lord Jeffs at any Invitational since the 2003 fall season. A total of 13 teams and 79 individuals participated in the tournament, which was hosted by the Orchards Golf Club (par 72 – 5,880 yards).

Amherst entered the weekend having come off one of the best team performances in recent program history, as the Jeffs placed fifth at last weekend’s Dartmouth Invitational. After shooting a 678 for a fifth place finish at last year’s Mount Holyoke Invitational, the Jeffs came out firing and led after the first day of competition en route to their impressive victory.

For the second consecutive week, Amherst was led by sophomore Hayley Milbourn (Baltimore, MD). After winning the 2007 Mount Holyoke Invitational, Milbourn shot a 159 this time around to finish in a four-way tie for third place behind Wellesley’s Kimberly Eaton (158) and individual champion Courtney Mazzei (155) of Middlebury.

Just one stroke behind Milbourn was Amherst first-year Laura Monty (North Granby, CT), who shaved 10 strokes off her score from just a week ago and landed alone in seventh place with a 160. Junior captain Kinne Schwartz (Allen, TX) followed with a 167 to tie for 21st place, with first-years Elaine Lin (Clarksville, MD) and Nina Yoo (Duluth, GA) rounding out the Jeffs’ top five with a 171 and 175, respectively.

Competing as individuals were fellow Lord Jeffs Jordan Chafetz (Palos Verdes, CA) and Alex Chang-Graham (San Carlos, CA), who finished 49th and in a tie for 55th, respectively. Chafetz lowered her Saturday score by 12 strokes to shoot an 84 on Sunday, while Chang-Graham’s day-two score was nine shots better than her day-one score.

While Amherst sat comfortably in first place, the fight for the runner-up spot was a close race among the host Lyons (663), University of Hartford (664) and Saint Lawrence University (665).

The Lord Jeffs are off to a very impressive start this season and have established themselves as one of the best teams in the NESCAC. Amherst returns to action Saturday, Sept. 27 to kick off the Wellesley Invitational.
