From a Wellesley College Release

WELLESLEY, MA - The Amherst College women's golf team traveled east to Wellesley College this afternoon for a shortened one-day event, after poor weather conditions called off Saturday's round at the 2008 Ann S. Batchelder Invitational. The rain shortened event took place at the par-72 Nehoiden Golf Course, with Middlebury College taking the 2008 team title.

The Panthers took top honors by five strokes, compiling the day's best score of 335. Led by Flora Weeks who tallied a 79 and finished tied for second overall, Middlebury got two other top-10 finishes from Courtney Mazzei (5th - 82) and Julie Ellenberger (9th - 84).

Amherst took second place with a 340 and was led by Kinne Schwartz (Allen, TX) who shot an 82 for a share of fifth place individually. First-year Elaine Lin (Clarksville, MD) also took a share of fifth place, while classmates Laura Monty (North Granby, CT) and Nina Yoo (Duluth, GA) tied for 17th place with a pair of 88s. Sophomore Hayley Milbourn (Baltimore, MD) placed 19th overall with an 89.

In just her third collegiate tournament, Lin played well in the rain-shortened event. Sharing fifth place individually with Schwartz, Lin placed inside the top five for the first time as an Amherst golfer. Icing on the cake for Schwartz and Lin was the fact that only one NESCAC golfer in the 41-player field beat their score of 82.

Individually, Vassar's Alex Bello took medalist honors, shooting an 18-hole total of 79. Her rounds of 41 and 38 gave her a two stroke win over Wellesley's Kim Eaton (Shepherdstown, WV) and Weeks of Middlebury who each carded a 79.

Ann S. Batchelder was a Wellesley faculty member for 38 years, teaching golf in the required physical education curriculum and also serving as one of the school's varsity squash coaches. She retired this spring, establishing a charitable gift annuity for the Friends of Wellesley College Athletics. Her generosity created one of the largest gifts from a member of the College’s academic community and will benefit Wellesley student-athletes for years to come.
