Amherst Takes Runner-Up Spot at Vassar Invitational

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The Amherst College women’s golf team carried a one-stroke lead over Williams into day two of the seventh annual Vassar College Invitational, but the Lord Jeffs would settle for second place at the par-72, 5,805-yard Dutchess Country Club course.
Williams shot a 686 over two days and was followed by Amherst (691) and Vassar (700). In a competitive 58-player field, Kimberly Eaton of Wellesley claimed the individual crown with a 163, while Middlebury's Flora Weeks took second place (165).
The Lord Jeffs led by one stroke after day one with a 341 but scored a 350 on day two. Williams shot a consistent 342 and 344 to win the tournament by five strokes. The Ephs’ No. 4 Victoria Student helped lead the comeback by shaving seven strokes with a 95 and an 88 for a combined 183.
Amherst's Liz Monty ’13 (North Granby, CT) shot an 80 on Saturday to hold the individual lead heading into Sunday, but her second-round 89 would leave her in a tie for seventh. Laura Monty ’11 (North Granby, CT) scored an 87 on Saturday and led Amherst on Sunday with an 85, leaving her in a tie for 11th. Hayley Milbourn ’11 (Baltimore, MD) was close behind at 174 in a tie for 13th, while Elaine Lin ’12 (Clarksville, MD) and Irene Hickey ’13 (Glencoe, IL) rounded out the Lord Jeffs at 176 and 181, respectively.
The shot of the tournament came from Colleen Richards of William Smith, who hit the second hole-in-one of her career on the 138-yard eighth hole.
The Lord Jeffs will return to action next weekend when they host the Jack Leaman Championship. Saturday’s opening round will take place at Hickory Ridge Country Club in Amherst. Sunday’s final round will be held at The Orchards Golf Club in South Hadley.
