Jeffs in Second After Day One of Jack Leaman Championship

AMHERST, MA – Methodist University placed four players in the top 10 to hold a six-stroke lead after day one of the 2011 Jack Leaman Women’s Golf Championship, hosted by Amherst College at the Hickory Ridge Country Club. Competition will conclude Sunday at The Orchards Golf Club in South Hadley, Mass.

The host Lord Jeffs have won the Jack Leaman Championship in each of the past two years, but Methodist’s 332 was six shots better than Amherst’s 338. Williams (348), NYU (352) and Vassar (356) rounded out the top five.

Methodist battled the cold and rain better than any other team did on Saturday, but it was Wellesley’s Kimberly Eaton who shot a 78 to carry a two-stroke lead into the clubhouse. Middlebury’s Flora Weeks and Methodist’s Gretchen McLean each shot an 80 and will begin Sunday in a tie for second place, while Amherst’s Hayley Milbourn ’11 (Baltimore, MD)—the three-time defending Jack Leaman champion—and Liz Monty ’13 (North Granby, CT) are tied for fourth at 81.

Weeks shot a 36 on the front nine to lead the group of 64 golfers, but nobody shot under 40 on the back nine as the temperatures dropped and the rain began to fall. Only two of the top 25 individual finishers shot better on the back nine than they did on the front, as NYU’s Kristina Shalhoup shot a 46-41-87 to tie for 16th, while Williams College’s Emily Wickstrom is tied for 19th after her 46-42-88.
