Amherst Places Second at Jack Leaman Championship

Liz Monty
Liz Monty '13 tied for second place, finishing only one stroke behind the individual champion.

SOUTH HADLEY, MA – Methodist University shot an impressive 319 on Sunday to claim the team title at the Jack Leaman Women’s Golf Championship, while Wellesley’s Kimberly Eaton was crowned the individual winner. The two-day event was hosted by Amherst College at Hickory Ridge Country Club and The Orchards Golf Club.

Sunday’s warm weather and dry grass provided a much more pleasant atmosphere than Saturday’s cold and rain did, as 11 of the 12 teams shot better at The Orchards (5,880 yards, par 72) than they did at Hickory Ridge. Top-ranked Methodist (651) held a six-stroke lead over Amherst after shooting a 332 on Saturday, and the Monarchs pulled away with a dominant second round. Amherst and third-ranked Williams each shot 329 on day two, as the 13th-ranked Lord Jeffs (667) finished second and the Ephs (677) placed third.

Eaton led all players with her 78 on Saturday and would shoot an 80 on Sunday to hold on for a one-stroke victory over Georgiana Salant of Williams (82-77-159) and Liz Monty ’13 (North Granby, CT) of Amherst (81-78-159). Kelsie Carralero took fourth place as Methodist’s top performer (84-76-160) and was joined by two teammates in the top seven, with her 76 on Sunday marking the best second-round performance in the 64-player field.

Joining Carralero in the top seven were Methodist’s Paige Caldwell (84-78-162) and Gretchen McLean (80-82-162), who tied for fifth with Middlebury’s Flora Weeks (80-82-162). Amherst’s Hayley Milbourn ’11 (Baltimore, MD) entered the weekend as the tournament’s three-time defending champion, but she would settle for eighth (81-84-165). Meghan Doherty of Holy Cross took ninth (83-83-166), while four players tied for 10th.

Several players shot better on day two, including Holy Cross’s Kerrin O’Leary (105-93-198) and Cortland’s Kelly Sheehan (106-94-200), who each shaved 12 strokes off their Saturday score. Mount Holyoke’s Alexandra Irish saw the most drastic improvement, shooting a 90 on the first day before coming in at 77 on Sunday to finish in a tie for 10th.

In addition to Monty and Milbourn cracking the top 10 for Amherst, Kristen Lee ’14 (Los Altos, CA) played well and tied for 18th (88-83-171), while Elaine Lin ’12 (Clarksville, MD) and Laura Monty ’11 (North Granby, CT) tied for 29th with two-day totals of 175.

The Lord Jeffs will close out the season in two weeks when they head to Williamstown for the Williams College Invitational.
