Amherst Places Fourth in Six-Team Field at Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY, VT – The 10th-ranked Amherst College women’s golf team shot a 350 on day two of the 2010 Middlebury Invitational this afternoon, settling to fourth place in the six-team field. Amherst finished with a two-day total of 708, just two strokes back of Vassar for third place. Williams won the event with a 324-328-652, while the host Panthers placed second with a 344-348-692.

The tournament took place on the campus of Middlebury, at the par-71 Ralph Myhre Golf Course. The tees were set up for play from 5,801 yards for the tournament.

Amherst was led by three-time NGCA All-American Hayley Milbourn (Balitmore, MD), who finished tied for seventh place individually. Milbourn carded an 87 on Saturday, before shooting the third lowest score on Sunday with an 82. Her two-day 169 left her 14 strokes behind eventual-medalist Georgiana Salant (75-80-155).

Amherst junior Elaine Lin (Clarksville, MD) took four strokes off her round one score of 87 on Sunday, shooting an 83 to finish in ninth place individually with a 170. Rookie Sooji Choi (Corona, CA) finished in 19th place with a 94-91-185, while sophomore Irene Hickey (Glencoe, IL) placed 21st individually with a 100-94-194.

Sophomore Liz Monty (N. Granby, CT) shot a 90 on day one, but withdrew on Sunday. Rookie Kristen Lee (Los Altos, CA) finished tied for 10th individually playing as an independent. Lee shot a 90 on Saturday, but carded an 84 on Sunday for a 174.  

Amherst will return to action next weekend at Williams College’s invitational tournament, The two day event at the Taconic Golf Club will begin on Saturday morning.
