WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – Liz Monty ’13 shot a two-day total of 164 to lead the Amherst College women’s golf team to a fifth-place finish at the Williams Fall Invitational. Standing in seventh after day one, the Jeffs improved across the board on Sunday, shooting a team 322 led by first-year Devyn Gardner’s three-over 74.
Williams shot a day two score of 316 to pace the field again on day two and take the Williams Fall Invitational by nineteen strokes over Ithaca College. Williams posted a two day total of 641, while Ithaca came in with 660. SUNY Cortland beat out Middlebury by three to post 666 and take third.
While Taconic Golf Club still proved a difficult test on day two, the course gave way to lower numbers on day two due to the lack of heavy rain. Thirteen of the fourteen teams scored better on day two and the course yielded nine scores in the 70s after only two yesterday.
Monty’s 84 paced Amherst on Saturday. The senior took four strokes off that total on day two to finish tied for eighth individually. After a 92 on day one, Gardner’s strong Sunday left her tied for 11th while Sooji Choi ‘14 also finished strong, carding an 82 on Sunday to drop eight strokes off her opening effort and finish at 172, good to tie for 23rd. Irene Hickey ’13 turned in scores of 90 and 86 to complete the Jeffs’ scoring, tying for 30th with her 176 total.
Amherst will be back in action next weekend at the Wellesley Invitational.
