AMHERST, MA - The New England Small College Athletic Conferecen named Amherst senior quad-captain Jake Duker (Newton, MA) the Player of the Week this evening. The Lord Jeff forward grabbed his second Player of the Week award this season, and third of his career, in his final chance for the award.

Duker played a part in both goals during Amherst’s 2-0 victory over Middlebury on Sunday in the 2008 NESCAC Men’s Soccer Championship, the first conference crown for the Lord Jeffs. Duker tallied what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 15th minute before assisting on an insurance marker in the 18th minute. He leads the league in both goals (13) and points (29) through 16 games, making a strong case for NESCAC Player of the Year.

Duker enters the upcoming NCAA Tournament with 76 career points on 31 goals and 14 assists. He has played in 64 games thus far, and has scored 14 game-winning-goals.

The Lord Jeffs earned an automatic berth into 2008 NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament by winning the NESCAC championship,  and will host a set of first and second round contests. Amherst will face Western New England (16-1-5), winners of the Commonwealth Coast Conference championship, on Saturday. The Lord Jeffs have faced the Golden Bears in each of the last two NCAA tournaments, falling 1-0 in the second round in 2006 followed by a 3-2 victory in the second round last year. Saturday’s winner will move on to face the winner of the St. Lawrence-MIT contest. St. Lawrence (12-6-1) won the Liberty League championship while MIT (16-3-2) received an at-large invitation to the tournament after the Engineers fell in the NEWMAC final.
