AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College men’s and women’s soccer teams welcomed alumni to the Pioneer Valley this past weekend. Thanks to perfect weather conditions and a great turnout, the weekend was a success as former players served as spectators, fans, participants, friends and mentors.

The weekend kicked off Saturday evening with alumni and the coaching staff cheering on the U.S. Men’s National team as it took on El Salvador. The Harp in Amherst was kind enough to order the game, which ended with a 2-1 victory for the Red, White and Blue. Those in attendance socialized with old friends and teammates while enjoying watching the United States fight for a spot in the World Cup.

On a gorgeous Sunday afternoon, the women kicked off at 1 p.m. and were followed by the men at 2 p.m. With several former standout players back Hitchcock Field, the alums were determined to display for the 2009 squads the tradition of Amherst soccer. Participating alumni on the men's side included former team captains Roger Pennington ’61, David Downs ’77 and Jerome De Bontin ’81, as well as former All-Americans Mike Wohl ’07 and Grayson Holland ’09. Also highlighting the group was the father-son combination of De Bontin and his son, Adrien ’06.

The men's game was physical and competitive, but it was a sad day for the egos of the alumni as the 2009 squad slipped away with a 2-1 victory. After watching their predecessors on the playing field, the current Lord Jeffs took the opportunity to speak with past players about their experiences as student-athletes at Amherst College.

Members of both games gathered for photos, followed by an afternoon cookout above Hitchcock Field. Sunday evening featured the final event, with all participants gathering at Amherst Brewing Company to unwind with some fun and games.

The Amherst coaches and players would like to thank all of the alumni for their involvement over Labor Day Weekend.  Your support is at the center of this program’s success. Thank you for all the continued support and we hope to see you at games this fall!
