Recapping Amherst's 2011 "Networking Nights"
AMHERST, MA – Amherst College continued its tradition of maintaining a strong tie between the Men’s Soccer program’s alumni and current team members through the annual “Networking Night” initiative. Members of the 2010 Lord Jeff squad partnered up with their predecessors in New York City and Boston for a pair of gatherings earlier this month, marking the fourth consecutive year the event has been held.
Networking Nights were developed to give current student-athletes the opportunity to speak on a professional level with influential alumni in various careers. The opening Networking Night of 2011 was held Monday, Mar. 7, at New York Junior League in Manhattan. We were fortunate enough to have current first-year player Max Fikke’s family host the event for us. The event was headlined by Tim Thornton ’80 of Goldman, Sachs & Co. and Ryan O’Donnell ’08 of Keefe, Bruyette and Woods. We were also fortunate to have other members of the Amherst community present as well.
The night was a success as players, coaches and alumni took the opportunity to engage in an open dialogue with one another about their respective career goals and experiences while swapping memorable soccer stories. The players had the opportunity to hear firsthand what life after Amherst College entails, as the alumni provided advice regarding internship opportunities. In addition, the event marked the first time some of the players ever got to experience NYC at its finest hours. On the way home, the team got “real” New York pizza and got to chat about the successful evening.
On Thursday, Mar. 10, the team traveled to Goodwin Proctor LLP in Boston. Jack Steele ’84 hosted the event, while Dave Wilson ’82 of Hirsch, Roberts and Weinstein LLP graciously assumed the role of Master of Ceremonies. The group of 11 alumni shared their stories—both career and soccer—and provided a professional outlook on life after Amherst College, also taking the time to evaluate résumés of current players.
The Amherst men’s soccer team would like to thank all of the alumni who took part in the recent Networking Nights for their support and participation. Furthermore, the players and coaching staff are excited to see as many of the alumni and friends as possible at the Reunion Game on May 27, 2011 at 3 p.m.
